Computer Application in Construction

          ABSTRACT

This course consists of three blocks: computer programming, database systems, and start-of-the-art technologies being used or having a potential for enhancing construction management. The programming block focuses on understanding and hand-on experience/skills on using MS Visual BASIC (VB) programming language. Database systems emphasize on relational database systems including the principles and database creation for actual construction/civil applications. The third block briefly in produces the following topics: expert systems (ES), neural networks (NN), data warehousing (DW), data mining (DM), and enterprise resource planning (ERP).

 Course objectives:

· Knowledge learning (weighted by 50%). Students must master the basic knowledge of the covered topics. Considering the wide coverage of the course and the fast change of computing related technologies, students must learn searching for relevant materials to enhance their learning.

· Applications (weighted by 25%). Students should be able to apply the learned knowledge to the industry.

· Research (25%). Through reading extensive journal articles, students should learn identifying research topics and developing methodologies.
